An Evening with Jasmine Guy

Jasmine Guy with Troy & Constance Simmons at Books & Books in Coral Gables/Miami
CORAL GABLES- She was known as the southern belle on "A Different World," Jasmine Guy entertained millions through her popular character Whitley Gilbert. She was always dressed in the latest fashion and spoke with an exaggerated southern accent. But Jasmine Guy was more than just a loveable character, she inspired generations to go to college.

"A Different World," provided a glimpse into exciting college life, filled with comedy, social challenges and of course romance. I felt personally connected to Jasmine Guy, who is also mixed race, with curly hair and fair skin.
Earlier this month, Jasmine Guy was in South Florida discussing and signing copies of her book "Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary" at the Books and Books in Coral Gables.
Fans were shoulder to shoulder in the tiny reading room, listening to the inspiration behind her book. The writing focuses on the life of Tupac Shakur's mother, and her involvement in the Black Panther movement; specifically her role as a woman during these turbulent times.
Jasmine Guy also spoke about her life as "Whitley Gilbert." She said that in many ways, the character had such a larger personality than she did. Whitley often eclipsed Jasmine. She also said it took 6 years of therapy for her to deal with the role, that she felt might have hurt her acting opportunities.  After the discussion, I simply had to meet her!  As soon as I walked up, she said, "You look like me 20 years ago!" She was gracious and kind, truly a memorable evening with the one and only Jasmine Guy.
