Handmade Movement in South Florida

My "Handmade Movement" story just aired on Local 10 News WPLG-ABC in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. In the story, I talk about the marriage between "do-it-yourself" crafters and the punk culture.

Here's a snippet from my online article.

“South Florida crafters and artisans are cashing in on their skills by selling what they make by hand. Once a month, promoters with the Indie Craft Bazaar host a craft show in Broward County. Last month, the event was held at Revolution Live, a concert venue in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Instead of needlepoint samplers, there are ceramic skulls, hand-stitched iPad covers and binders made out of duct tape.

A Little Inspiration

Springtime is filled with inspiration. It’s a fresh, green, uplifting season that offers plenty of ideas for poets, songwriters and photographers!
One of my favorite natural light photographers is Carrie Reed.

She uses nature as her backdrop to create the perfect setting for her clients.
Here are some recent photos of a cute little newborn—modeling Huggabeans Crochet Baby Beanies.

She currently works out of Thomasville, Georgia but ALSO works in areas from Valdosta, Georgia to Tallahassee, Florida! Check out more of her work at http://www.carriereedphotography.com/!

Where did the name "Huggabeans" come from?

When I decided to launch my online baby beanie and newborn photography prop shop,  I spent weeks trying to come up with the perfect name.
After much deliberation, I decided to use a name that was very dear to me as a child- Huggabeans.

I don’t have any children (yet)-but I did have a baby doll!
Her name was Huggy-Beans!  It was Christmas day 1988- when I recieved my doll. I loved her so much! But instead of calling her Huggy-Beans—I pronounce her name “HuggaBeans!”

Sad to say, a few years ago some horrible thieves stole my precious doll!
I did a little bit of research and found out she was the FIRST mass-produced Black character doll ever made in the United States. She could sell in auction for up to $200! Can you believe that!

So—if you happen to see a Huggy-Beans doll on E-Bay or a Flea Market—Let me know!!

Huggabeans Giveaway

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mommy Bloggers!  I recently found Joanna Brock with BrockPaperScissors!  She’s a stay-at-home mother of two-- Nico (3 1/2) and Lola (1). She’s also a military wife—something I hold dear to my heart!  As a former army brat, I know the stress she must feel--
balancing her life between her husband’s deployments.
Joanna agreed to review my hand crocheted baby beanies at http://www.huggabeans.com/. We also decided to join forces for a Huggabeans Giveaway. One lucky reader will win $40 of store credit!
Please visit her blog for details on competing! Good Luck!

Huggabeans Newborn Beanies

For the past 4 years, I've been working with New York City Newborn Photographer Royce Winnick.
With painstaking detail, she delicately places these crochet beanies on cute little infants.

Capturing the first few days of life is truly amazing.

These tiny newborns are precious to photography. Getting the perfect picture takes quite a bit of patience.

You can check out more of Royce's work at www.roycewinnickphotography.com. These new designs are now available on www.Huggabeans.com.
