Save Your Do Gym Wrap -- Does it work?

Did you know that 40% of women with textured hair avoid exercise to maintain hairstyles! Check out this story I did on workout woes. If you have curly hair like me, you can totally understand!  I enjoy working out-- but I don’t like what happens to my hair afterwards.

So, I decided to try “Save Your Do” a workout hair wrap create by actress Nicole Ari Parker.  She looks amazing—so I thought she might know the secret to looking good!

DID IT WORK? Yes—Kinda. After jogging for about 30 minutes, my hair was still wet. BUT— my hair did not curl up like it normally does.  I still had to blow it out… but overall it “Saved My Do”
The gym wrap is reasonably priced at $24.95 to $29.95.  Plus, part of the proceeds go to the Sophie's Voice Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about spina bifida! So—there’s no reason not to try it out!

Does your hair keep you from working out??

Earlier this week, I had a chance to do a story with an amazing woman--Rashida Bartley.  She is a world class athlete! The Miami Native bikes, swims, runs and loves yoga. In a few months she’s been competing in the Iron Man Triathlon. But instead of questions about her health regiment, most women what to know about her hair.
How do you keep your hair healthy if you are a workout queen?

There are a number of obstacles that may keep you from working out and for women hair tends to be one of them. In fact, researchers found about two of every five women with textured hair, avoid exercising because of concerns about their hair.

There are some great tips-- to keeping your hair looking great!

Natural Curly Hair for TV?

Earlier this month, I saw ABC World News Now Anchor Sunny Hostin wearing her hair curly. She looked amazing!  It’s definitely not a look you typically see on television—especially network news!  Hostin is a fellow mixed chick with a Puerto Rican mother and an African American father!
For decades, curly haired women have consistently been told that straightening hair is a good move for their careers.
I’ve been told that my curly hair can look unkept or unprofessional.  So, instead of wearing my hair natural—I press it out straight!

Which leads me to the question…. What’s wrong with curly/natural hair on television? Why don’t we see more women like Sunny wearing their hair natural?
Of course, hair is a very touchy subject in the black community!  Rhonda Lee, a Louisiana meteorologist was recently fired for defending her natural hair to a viewer! Read more here.

As for me, I love my curly hair-- but with this South Florida humidity it only takes two minutes for my curls to frizz up.  Instead of looking like a broadcaster, I turn into Diana Ross!

What do you think about curly hair on TV?

Sandy Hook Elementary-Should it be torn down?

By Guest Blogger: Jason Martinez
Today, parents and other members of the community in Newtown, CT will meet to discuss the future of Sandy Hook Elementary. As of today, the school is still considered a crime scene. If you’re a parent of elementary school-aged kids like me…ask yourself this. Could you send your kids back in to those same classrooms again?

Should it be torn down? If it was up to me…I’d say hell yes. This was a massacre. The healthy learning environment it once was…is tainted forever. Out of respect for the victims and families…it should ultimately be THEIR choice on whether this school remains standing. And IF they decide that breaking out the wrecking ball is the next best step….then my idea is put on a telethon-style donation drive. Put it on every network during primetime programming. Americans who were so desperate to help in the aftermath…can now contribute and pay for a new state-of-the-art school. When people ask….”what’s wrong with this country….I always think in response….”What’s RIGHT with this country?” By in large, Americans are still good, sympathetic and generous human beings. I truly think people will step up to the plate in a telethon like this as they’ve done with Haiti, 9-11, Stand Up to Cancer….and now Sandy Hook. I’ll pledge the first $100.
One more thing. Change the name. Goodbye Sandy Hook Elementary. Hello “Hochsprung Elementary”….as in Dawn Hochsprung….the Principal who died for her students. What’s more symbolic and fitting than that?

My Unhealthy Yarn Obsession

Some people collect shoes...I can't help myself when it comes to cotton, wool and alpaca!
Those who know me-- know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE YARN.  I started crocheting at the age of 7--and since then I've been crazy over yarn.
I live in a SMALL Miami loft--with very little room for storage--so I've resulted to putting my yarn in the kitchen cabinets!! I'm a little crazy.

But, I do have some good news out there for other crazy "Hookers" like me-- there's a great yarn sale at Micheal's Craft Store THIS WEEK!

A ball of cotton yarn--normally $2.27 is only $1 this week--so stock up!

What's your obsession?

Night Owl Market Looking for Vendors

Looking for a place to sell your crafty goodies!  The Night Owl Market is searching for interesting vendors to displace crafts, art and other retro items at their next event January 26, 2013,

The best part of the event is that all the proceeds from the vendor fee and customer donations will go directly to Flager Garden. The Flagler Village Community Garden is set to open in the Spring of 2013!  The goal of the park is to promote urban gardening for recreation, education, food production and beautification. It’s also a place that will foster public awareness for the uses and values of gardening and other green spaces within the community.

Also—should we add that there will be free alcohol at that event! Need we say more!
